Angelina Jolie is one of the most glamorous, talked-about movie stars of her generation, from her Oscar-winning performance in Girl, Interrupted to blockbuster roles in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider and Maleficent.

As a result, the star's personal life has also often been in the spotlight, especially her headline-grabbing relationship, marriage, and highly tumultuous divorce from Brad Pitt.

The 51-year-old shares six children with Brad, 62 – Maddox, 24, Pax, 22, Zahara, 21, Shiloh, 20, and twins Knox and Vivienne, 18. The brood are paving their own path in the industry and have all opted to send a clear message and drop their father's last name.

The separation in the family came after Angelina alleged Brad assaulted both her and her children on a private plane flight in 2016. Brad has always denied the allegations. In October 2022, Angelina filed a counterclaim against her ex-husband Brad during their ongoing legal battle about Miraval, a French winery which they both own.

Angelina made a rare comment about her kids' estrangement from Brad in June 2026.

"I think my fighting spirit is finally back," she told Variety. "I lost it for a bit. I got kind of taken down a little bit, and it's coming back in large part thanks to my children, who are now older, and encouraging it."

But what else do we know about the fractured family? Join HELLO! as we explore everything we know about the couple's famous kids and why they chose to distance themselves from their dad.

Maddox, 24

The Hollywood A-lister adopted her first child, seven-month-old Maddox, in 2002. Born in Cambodia, Angelina fell in love with her first son's country while filming for Lara Croft: Tomb Raider in 2001, and chose to adopt Maddox after returning to the country later that year and visiting the orphanage where he was living.

While the actress was in a relationship with Billy Bob Thornton at the time she adopted her first son, Angelina chose to adopt Maddox on her own. When she and Billy split later in 2002, the Changeling actress became a single parent.

The Hollywood actress, whose father is Oscar-winning actor Jon Voight, has spoken often about why she chose to adopt. Speaking with Vogue India in 2020 about her first adoption, Angelina said: "In 2001, I was in a school programme in Samlout playing blocks on the floor with a little kid and as clear as day I thought: 'My son is here.' A few months later I met baby [Maddox] at an orphanage. I can't explain it and am not one to believe in messages or superstition. But it was just real and clear."

The Maleficent actress' eldest child studied biochemistry at South Korea's Yonsei University, where he also learned Korean. Recently, he was spotted getting his new home ready in Los Angeles.

On Monday, July 13, Maddox took the next step toward dropping "Pitt" from their names. He published a legal notice in the Los Angeles Daily Journal, in accordance with California law requesting to go by Maddox Chivan Jolie.

The long-time UNHCR ambassador then adopted her fourth child, Pax, from Vietnam in 2007. Despite the fact they adopted their second son following the birth of Shiloh and their adoption of her older sister Zahara, because Pax was born in 2003 he became the couple's second oldest child.

Pax was only adopted by Brad once the couple and their kids had returned to the US in 2008. Angelina had to adopt Pax as a single parent due to a law in Vietnam at the time preventing unmarried couples from co-adopting children.

The actress and director admitted to Vogue India in 2020: "I did originally think not to adopt from Vietnam because Mad was Cambodian and the two countries have a complex history," but she added: "I thought of my own country and our involvement in south-east Asia. I thought of focusing on a future where we were all family… I am very blessed to have been allowed to be their mom. I am grateful every day."

Zahara, 21

In July 2005, Angelina adopted her second child and first daughter, six-month-old Zahara. At this point, the actress was dating her partner Brad. The couple adopted Zahara from Ethiopia together. The Ocean's Eleven actor also adopted Maddox at the same time.

In 2020, Angelina opened up during an interview with Ugandan climate activist Vanessa Nakate for TIME's 100 Talks series about her pride in Zahara's connection to her African heritage.

"I have learned so much from her. She is my family, but she is an extraordinary African woman and her connection to her country, her continent, is her own and it’s something I only stand back in awe of," Angelina said.

Zahara graduated from Spelman College on Sunday, May 17. And when she walked across the stage, the crowd erupted into cheers when she received her diploma, going by "Zahara Marley Jolie," effectively confirming what was widely known at this point that she had dropped her father Brad's last name.

The 21-year-old made it official when she filed alongside her brother Maddox to officially change her name in July.

Shiloh, 20

Brangelina's next family move was to conceive a child together. Their third child, Shiloh, was born in 2006 while the couple was in Namibia. Her name, Shiloh – of Hebrew origin, meaning "the tranquil one" – carried deep sentimental value for her mother Angelina. It was the exact name her own parents, Jon and Marcheline Bertrand, had chosen for a son who was tragically miscarried.

In tandem with these shifting family dynamics, Shiloh has carved out a distinct identity from a very young age. Raised in a multicultural environment, she has lived a globetrotting lifestyle, moving between countries for her parents' filming schedules while developing a keen interest in her siblings' diverse heritage.

Shiloh was the first to take formal legal action regarding her name. On her 18th birthday two years ago, she filed paperwork to legally drop her paternal surname and change her name to simply Shiloh Jolie – a definitive sign of her reported estrangement from the actor. Her attorney, Peter Levine, stated that the young woman made the independent choice following "painful events" in her life.

Recently, Shiloh has dedicated her life to dance. She trained for years at the elite Millennium Dance Complex in Los Angeles. And in April 2026, she appeared in a music video for South Korean pop artist Dayoung's track What's a Girl to Do.

Later in 2008, Angelina gave birth to their twins, son Knox and daughter Vivienne. The youngest son of Brangelina recently graduated from Fusion Academy in Los Angeles, going by Knox Jolie at the ceremony, and competes as a Muay Thai fighter.

In June, he was spotted training in a casual athletic look, pairing running shoes and sports shorts with a black T-shirt featuring legendary boxer Muhammad Ali. His bright orange hair added a bold touch to his sporty ensemble, while his concentrated expression suggested he was fully committed to the session.

Vivienne, 18

Vivienne is technically Angelina and Brad's youngest child. Her twin Knox was born a minute before her at a hospital in Nice, France.

She has followed in her parent's footsteps. In 2024, she was chosen by her mom to work as her assistant in her new Broadway show, The Outsiders. In the playbill for the show, she chose to be listed as Vivienne Jolie.

When news of Angelina's involvement in the show was announced, a source close to the Changeling star told HELLO!: "Angelina is excited about this new venture. She believes this is a musical for all ages, but particularly resonates with young people."

The Oscar-winning star herself added of her daughter: "Viv reminds me of my mother in that she isn't focused on being the center of attention but in being a support to other creatives."

"She's very thoughtful and serious about theater and working hard to best understand how to contribute," Angelina added.
