Andy Warhol's king of pop painting expected to fetch millions

Monday August 3, 2009

A portrait of Michael Jackson painted by US artist Andy Warhol is to be sold at auction in New York.

And giving the British public a chance to see the iconic image beforehand, the picture will first be displayed at London's O2 arena - where Michael was due to perform his final concerts.

The green-hued piece, which portrays the 50-year-old singer in his Thriller era, is due to hang as part of London's British Music Experience from August 6, before heading to the Big Apple.

Although the starting price for the artwork is £500,000, Andy Warhol's paintings have previously sold for millions. His abstract version of Dame Elizabeth Taylor sold for £14 million in 2007.

"This Andy Warhol portrait brings together the uncontested King of Pop Art with the uncontested King of Pop," said Janet Lehr, acting for the seller.

"The portrait was painted at the height of their careers and is a celebration of two of the great talents in global cultural history."
