For most people, celebrating a birthday brings with it the traditional blowing out of candles and cheerful singing.
The tables were turned on Tuesday, though, as President Barack Obama turned 48.
In true selfless style, the US leader turned the attention to veteran reporter Helen Thomas, who was celebrating her 89th birthday.
After singing Happy Birthday, he presented Helen with candle-filled cupcakes, before planting a kiss on her cheek.
And as he ignored reporters' questions about his own special day, Barack spent time quietly speaking to the lucky lady - who has covered every president since John F Kennedy.
The President later celebrated his own birthday with a game of his beloved basketball, before playing a round of ten-pin bowling.
