'Overwhelmed' Amanda Knox thanks friends and family

Back on US soil following her acquittal for the murder of Meredith Kercher, Amanda Knox struggles to contain her emotions.

The 24-year-old spoke briefly to reporters, saying she was "overwhelmed".

At the news conference in Seattle airport, she also thanked those who had supported her during her four years in jail.

Joking that she had to be reminded to speak in English rather than Italian, the American student told reporters: "I am really overwhelmed right now.

"I was looking down from the airplane and it seemed like everything wasn’t real.

"Thank you to everyone who has believed in me, who has defended me, who has supported my family," she said in a broken voice.

In 2007, Amanda and her ex boyfriend Raffaele Sollecito, 27, were convicted for the murder of her flatmate, British student Meredith Kercher.

But the convictions were overturned on Monday by an eight-member jury after doubts were raised over DNA evidence.

Her father Curt has said she "needed her space", adding that Amanda has not agreed to any media deals.

He also said his daughter wanted to resume her studies at the University of Washington.
