Royle Family star Liz Smith to quit acting at 87

Liz Smith, who played Nana in sitcom The Royle Family, has announced she's retiring from acting after suffering a stroke.

The 87-year-old, who started acting in her 50s, says she is getting stronger by the day, though admits further acting roles are probably beyond her.

"I'm nearly 90 so if I don't do much now at least I've earned a rest," she says.

Next Sunday Liz can be seen taking her first foreign holiday in BBC4 programme Grey Expectations, which aims to challenge preconceptions about what's possible for the over 60s. Cameras captured her cruise trip from Croatia to Venice.
