Brit lands 'best job in the world' as Barrier Reef caretaker

Thursday May 7, 2009

It's a job for which most people can only imagine being hired, but for 34-year-old Ben Southall it has become a reality. The 34-year-old from Hampshire beat 34,000 rivals from 200 countries to become caretaker of Hamilton Island on Australia's Great Barrier Reef.
Tasks central to the role – for which Ben will be paid £74,000 for six months – include swimming and snorkeling to explore the islands of the Great Barrier Reef, making friends with the locals, and meeting visitors who arrive on day trips.
Already an active blogger, Ben is required to keep a video diary  which - it is hoped - will help boost the island's recession-hit tourist industry.
"I can't believe it. I'm ecstatic," says the Reef's new resident, who will live in a three-bedroom villa on Hamilton with his Canadian girlfriend
