Caring William and Kate visit fire-ravaged town

Thursday July 7, 2011

A few months ago, Prince William witnessed first-hand the earthquake-stricken city of Christchurch in New Zealand.

And this week the royal was again showing concern for victims of natural disasters.

On Wednesday, he and the Duchess of Cambridge made a surprise visit to a town almost entirely reduced to ashes by forest fires two months ago.

The couple flew to Slave Lake in Northern Alberta on a government Challenger jet, where they were met by a small line of dignitaries.

They went on to meet families affected by the natural disaster and offered words of comfort.

The Canadian secretary to the Queen has confirmed that the request to tour the devastated town came directly from the couple themselves.

But they opted to keep their visit a secret to ensure no disruption to relief efforts in the region.
