Prince Harry qualifies as prestigious Apache pilot

Thursday March 10, 2011

After passing a gruelling ten-month course to fly attack helicopters, Prince Harry is now a qualified Apache helicopter pilot.

The 26-year-old - whom sources describe as a natural flier - could now be eligible to return to Afghanistan, serving in a front line combat position from 2012.

A spokesman for the Prince - whose official military title is Lieutenant Wales of the Army Air Corps - said he was "delighted".

In the past, Harry has spoken candidly about the daunting nature of the course.

"There's times when I thought, I'm really not cut out for this, mentally," he once said.

But the Prince's hard work has now put him in an elite category.

Only the most talented trainees are offered the chance to fly Apaches, often described as the most lethal aircraft ever created.

Moreover, a mere two percent of all military helicopter pilots end up flying the strike aircraft - each worth £35 million.
