Sir Paul McCartney awarded top French honour

Monday September 10, 2012

National treasure Sir Paul McCartney has been decorated with France's highest civil honour for his services to music.

The former Beatle was awarded the French Legion of Honour by French Prime Minister Francois Hollande, in a private ceremony at the Elysee Palce.

The Band on the Run star said: "It is such an honour to be awarded this."

The Prime Minister also joked that he has always preferred The Beatles to their Sixties rock rivals The Rolling Stones.

The title, created by Napoleon Bonaparte in 1802, is normally only awarded to French citizens.

Sir Paul will join the ranks of other Brits to have received the award, such as Sir Laurence Olivier, Shirley Bassey and the Queen.
