'Bits are dropping off the frame': Prince Philip on age

Friday February 11, 2011

With his 90th birthday approaching in June, Prince Philip hasn’t lost his famous quirky sense of humour.

Being honoured as “Consort of the year” by The Oldie magazine – a publication described as an antidote to youth culture – the Duke of Edinburgh had a joke about his advancing years

"I much appreciate your invitation to receive an ‘Oldie of the Year Award’," he wrote to organisers.

"There is nothing like it for morale, to be reminded that the years are passing - ever more quickly - and that bits are beginning to drop off the ancient frame.”

Sending his regrets at not being able to attend the ceremony and receive his award, he continued: "But it is nice to be remembered at all."

The award comes as the Prince’s life is being celebrated in an exhibition at Windsor Castle.

The display will include photos, mementos, and art work covering his birth in Corfu into the Greek royal family to his current life.

And the exhibition, including pieces painted by Prince Philip himself, runs through to January 2012.
