Nelson Mandela struck down with lung infection

South Africa's first black president Nelson Mandela was brought into hospital with a lung infection, officials have confirmed.

The 94-year-old was rushed to a military hospital in Pretoria on Saturday, after tests showed that the human rights campaigner had suffered a recurrence of a previous lung infection.

Presidential spokesperson Mac Maharaj has said that Mr Mandela is responding to treatment.

The apartheid leader's current condition has inevitably caused concern amongst South Africans. The Nobel Peace Prize winner has previously been treated for severe chest infections.
