Fabio Capello brought David Beckham's England career to a close on TV on Wednesday night - without telling him beforehand.
When asked whether Becks, 35, was involved in his plans for the Euro 2012 qualifiers, the Italian football executive replied that "he is probably a little bit old."
He added: "I won't be picking him for any more competitive matches.
The England boss revealed that the football star would "play one friendly to say bye bye" - possibly on November 17 against France.
A spokesman for Becks confirmed that Fabio had not discussed the issue with the former Manchester United and Real Madrid player before broadcasting the news on TV.
David's spokesman stated: "There has been no discussion of retirement. He will always be available for his country, when fit and, if needed, he will be there."
Fabio has got the ball rolling on ending one of the greatest careers in the country's football history.
Becks has won 115 caps and scored 17 goals for his country since making his debut in 1996 against Moldova.
