Sherlock Holmes back for a third series

Monday January 16, 2012

The creators of BBC's hit series Sherlock Holmes have revealed there will be a sequel after Sunday’s dramatic finale.

Before the start of series two, co-creator Steven Moffat told the BBC there was “no guarantee we’ll be bringing him back”.

But on Sunday night, he tweeted: “Of course there’s going to be a third series – it was commissioned at the same time as the second. Gotcha!”

Co-creator Mark Gatiss also wrote on Twitter:”Gotcha! And of course there’ll be a third series!”

The modern version of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s detective tales stars Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role.

The original last book The Final Problem published in 1893 concluded with Sherlock falling into the Reichenbach Falls in Switzerland.

Conan Doyle later resurrected his hero, however.

Sunday night’s episode was called The Reichenbach Fall hinting that the second series might be the last.

What does remains unclear is when the third series would be aired since Benedict and Martin Freeman, who plays Dr Watson, are involved in major Hollywood productions this year.
