Kanye West 'to take time off' after Taylor Swift incident

Wednesday September 16, 2009

Kanye West made an unscheduled appearance on Jay Leno's late night show to apologise to Taylor Swift for interrupting her winner's speech at Sunday's MTV awards.

The 32-year-old rapper, who shocked viewers when he took the microphone from Taylor's hands to declare Beyonce should have won her award, said he was sorry for being "rude".

"It's been extremely difficult just dealing with the fact that I hurt someone or took something away, you know, from a talented artist or anyone," he said.

"But I need to, after this, take some time off and analyse how I'm going to make it through the rest of this life, how I'm going to improve."

The Stronger singer became visibly moved when his host asked how Kanye's late mother would have thought about the incident.

"I'm just ashamed that my hurt caused someone's else's hurt – and I don't try to justify it because I was in the wrong" he said.

The musician has now called Taylor personally to say sorry. "He was very sincere in his apology and I accepted his apology," the 19-year-old country star confirmed.

Meanwhile, President Obama has also stepped into the fray, calling rap star Kanye West a "jackass" for interrupting Taylor's speech.

Speaking before a press interview, Barack added: "I thought it was inappropriate, it's like she's getting an award, why are you butting in?"
