US First Lady Michelle Obama has entered the prestigious Forbes list of the world's most powerful women.
Placed at number 40, she just pips Queen Elizabeth II who is positioned at 42.
German Chancellor Angela Merkel has taken the number one spot for the fourth time in six years.
The contestants are awarded positions based upon their media "reach" and financial impact.
"It's a good year for women in power," says co-editor of the annual list, Chana Schoenberger.
"The economic turmoil means that companies and countries are frequently looking for a change, so I think we'll see opportunities for women leaders."
