Ricky Martin honoured for his work in gay community

He came out as a "fortunate homosexual" in 2010 after years of hiding his sexuality.

And on Sunday Ricky Martin was honoured by a media group for his work as a gay role model at a gala.

The Puerta Rican singer was urging people to spread gay rights and he said: "I just want to be free. I can say, today I am free."

The gala was New York's Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation Media Awards (GLAAD).

The association recognises the best representatives of the gay community in film, television, radio, music and newspapers.
