First lady and the tramp: Carla befriends homeless man

The wife of French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Carla Bruni, has struck up a friendship with a homeless man who lives near her luxury Paris home.

Denis, 53, says the two engage in conversation as the model-turned-singer passes him on the daily school run with her son.

"She asks after me, she gives me one or two 50 or 100-euro notes," the homeless man told the Daily Telegraph.

The two apparently discuss books and music, and France's first lady has even given him a signed copy of her latest album.

However, Denis turned down Carla's offer to put him up in a hotel room.

"It's not that I enjoy being in the street but I've got my habits," he says.

"People say it's cold. That's true but I'm well covered-up.

"What's more, Carla gave me a military-type duvet, which keeps me warm."
