'I don't pay attention,' says Carla Bruni on affair rumours

Carla Bruni-Sarkozy has spoken out for the first time since reports surfaced that she and French president husband Nicolas are both involved in extra-marital affairs.

"I don’t pay too much attention to what people say because that would hurt me too much," she tells Madame Figaro magazine.

"What people say about me hurts me if it comes from my close friends, family, from my husband, my son and from the world of music.

"If I listened to all the rumours, I would drown in them. But if I don’t, they can’t touch me.

"And just like everyone, I would really like to be loved. I would prefer that to being hated. I want people to understand me."
