Arlene Phillips returning to Strictly as choreographer

Former Strictly Come Dancing judge Arlene Phillips is returning to the show as a choreographer, the BBC has confirmed.

The 66-year-old's new role comes just weeks after producers' decision to replace her as a judge with former contestant Alesha Dixon.

After her dismissal caused a public outcry, with many fans accusing the BBC of ageism, a new position has been created for Arlene.

"Arlene may not be a judge anymore, but we still want her on board as her expertise is unparallelled," a spokesperson says.

"We've offered her a role doing what she does best, choreography. As viewers know, the group dances are highly technical and it's not an easy thing to do."
