French say Queen is welcome at D Day memorial event

Thursday May 28, 2009

The French government insists Queen Elizabeth is welcome to attend a commemoration of the D Day landings, and denyies reports the British monarch had been snubbed.

Buckingham Palace confirmed the Queen, who was present at the 60th anniversary celebrations in 2004 (pictured), had received no official invitation. An omission which led to reports she was "annoyed" at being excluded.

A spokesman for the French government said France had invited Britain to attend the ceremony, however, and that it was up to the British government to decide who that representative would be.

"The Queen of England, as British head of state, is naturally welcome," he said. "It's not up to France to decide who will represent Britain. Our contacts on this ceremony were members of the British Government who wanted to take part in a ceremony which was from the start Franco-American."
