British footballer Ashley Cole was devastated after Cheryl Cole launched divorce proceedings, reportedly telling his England teammates: "I thought she would never leave me".
A source told The Sun newspaper: "Ashley believed because of the house and nearly four years of marriage, she wouldn't up and leave totally and so quickly.
He thought there would be another chance to sort things out.
Cheryl has asked for no money from the Chelsea player and says he can keep their £6 million Surrey mansion.
She is now expected to concentrate her efforts on establishing a TV career in the States with the help of Simon Cowell.
