Sarah Palin serves hot dogs on her final day in office

After stunning even her closest friends earlier this month with her plans to step down from her post 18 months early, Sarah Palin has officially stepped down as Alaskan governor.

Tthe 45-year-old Republican spent her last hours doling out hot dogs to supporters who had travelled from far and wide to see her bid farewell at a public barbeque.

To raucous cheers from over 5,000 people gathered at Pioneer Park in Fairbanks, Alaska, Ms Palin said that she would never stop working for the state.

"When I took the oath to serve you, I promised... to doggedly guard the interests of this great state like that grizzly guards her cubs. As a mother naturally guards her own," she said.

"And I will keep that vow wherever the road may lead."

On annoucing her news last month, John McCain's former running-mate fuelled reports that she may be considering a run for the White House in 2012.

Though other suggestions are that she's working on an autobiography or could host a television chat show.
