The Catcher in the Rye author JD Salinger dies at 91

JD Salinger, the US author of the classic 1951 novel The Catcher In The Rye, has passed away at the age of 91.

The reclusive writer died of natural causes at his home in the state of New Hampshire, his son has confirmed.

The 91-year-old shot to fame in the early 1940s with the publication of many short stories in magazines.

It was The Catcher in the Rye that became his most successful piece, however, and is now seen as one of the most influential American novels of the modern era.

In his later years, J D - real name Jerome David - bought a house in New Hampshire and retreated into seclusion.

He married Claire Douglas when he was 35 in 1954. They had two children and divorced in 1967.
