It was supposed to be a night of glitz and glamour for Hollywood's two leading ladies, Keira Knightley and Eva Mendes.
But things took an unexpected turn at the Rome premiere of their new film Last Night when around 800 people stormed the red carpet.
The screening, which marked the opening of the Rome Film Festival, was delayed by a protest over the Italian government's drastic cuts to funds for cultural events.
Both Keira and Eva were forced to avoid the red carpet and were ushered into the theatre, surrounded by bodyguards.
The film's director, Massy Tadjedin, expressed her solidarity with the protesters saying, "We are pleased to renounce the red carpet and support you".
