While some stars have been swanning around in Cannes or savouring the atmosphere at the Monaco Grand Prix, other celebrities opted to stay close to home over the bank holiday weekend to hang out with the little people in their lives.

Daddy's girl Ava Jackman had the undivided attention of her X-Men hero father Hugh, for instance, on a sunny day out near the family's base in New York.

Squealing with delight, three-year-old Ava, his adopted daughter with Deborra-Lee Furness, seemed to be relishing the opportunity to have her papa all to herself as a laughing Hugh tossed her high into the air.

Also in the city, actress Michelle Williams had a tender hug for the apple of her eye - little Matilda Rose, three - whose father was the late Australian Heath Ledger, as the pair went scooting in their neighbourhood.

Mother and daughter time was on the agenda, too, for Melanie Griffiths and Stella, her 12-year-old with Antonio Banderas.

Casually dressed for an excursion in Los Angeles, Antonio's favourite girls were indulging in some time-honoured female activities - retail therapy and having a good girlie chat.

Meanwhile, Matthew McConaughey took his nipper Levi on one of their regular paddles in the ocean. The avid beach goer, who's often seen practicing yoga, walking his dogs and surfing on the Malibu strip, is keen that his ten-month-old son love the sea as much as dad does.

And the little boy's mum, Brazilian model Camila Alves, seems as keen as her man on developing Levi's affection for ozone and shoreline pursuits. "Levi is going to have his first surf lesson when he can start walking!" she reveals.
