Together they have battled the ruthless ruler Lord Farquaad, taken on a wicked Fairy Godmother and thwarted the plans of Prince Charming.

So understandably the stars of Shrek have developed a great camaraderie together.

That much was evident as the gang reunited in New York this week to celebrate the world premiere of the fourth and final instalment in the franchise.

Clearly enjoying the chance to be back with her male co-stars, Cameron Diaz joined Eddie Murphy, Mike Myers and Antonio Banderas at the Shrek Forever After screening – the opening movie at the Tribeca Film Festival.

The blonde beauty, who has voiced the character of Princess Fiona in all four instalments, lit up the green carpet in a simple but chic black dress as she joked around with Eddie, who provides the voice for Donkey, Mike, who stars as Shrek, and Antonio, who joined the team as Puss in Boots in the second film.

Sure to be a big hit when it arrives in cinemas, Shrek Forever After is already something of a record breaker.

On Wednesday it became the very first 3D film to open the annual Big Apple festival – co-founded by Robert De Niro in 2002.

The animation sees Shrek, bored with his domesticated life, make a pact with Rumpelstiltskin to feel like a real ogre again for just one day.

But he is tricked by the fairytale character, and is instead transported to an alternate version of Far Far Away where he has never met Fiona, ogres are hunted, Rumpelstiltskin is king, Puss is overweight and Donkey is an intellectual forced to pull carts for a group of cackling witches.

The film is due on in the US on May 21, and will arrive in the UK on July 9.
