For Barack Obama's daughter Malia celebrating her birthday with a great deal of hoopla is one of them.
His eldest's special day coincides with the Fourth of July holiday and she enjoyed a real treat when it came to the festivities.
When the American President and his wife Michelle threw open the doors of the executive mansion for a celebration featuring live music and fireworks for 1,200 military families the youngster really threw herself into the party.
Her cheek daubed with a painted on Stars and Stripes flag, Malia, who turned 12 this year, greeted the crowds on the South Lawn, before tucking into a barbecue of hamburgers and hotdogs.
And a host of other famous faces were also getting into the Independence Day spirit. Jennifer Garner and her two little girls Violet, four, and 18th-month-old Seraphina watched a parade near their home in California.
Violet showed her patriotic spirit by wearing red, white and blue, and blowing a blue vuvuzela.
Meanwhile, Jim Carrey, a Canadian who took US citizenship in 2004, hosted his annual party at home. At the bash all eyes were on his four-month-old grandchild Jackson – the son of his daughter Jane.
