As the public remembers Diana, the Princess of Wales, on the seventh anniversary of her death on Tuesday, it has been revealed a new film based on the tragedy is being planned.
Dame Helen Mirren is set to star as Queen Elizabeth II in the movie, which examines the relationship between Buckingham Palace and Downing Street in the week following the late royal's deadly Paris car crash on August 31, 1997. "It sees everything from the point of view of the Queen, of (Prime Minister Tony) Blair and of the people," said producer Christine Langan.
Director Stephen Frears, whose previous works include Dirty Pretty Things and High Fidelity, said he hopes his latest film will be shown in cinemas. "If you're going to make a film about the Queen you ought to go for the big one," he said. "I think it ought to be for the movies."
The film is from the same team which made the acclaimed Channel 4 drama The Deal, which looked at the relationship between Prime Minister Blair and Gordon Brown over the Labour Party leadership. Actor Michael Sheen, who played the PM in the first film, will reprise his role in the new project. |
