With filming completed on her latest movie Mr And Mrs Smith, Angelina Jolie has been getting back to the work she says is most important to her. The Oscar-winning actress jetted into Pakistan this week in her role as a goodwill ambassador for the United Nations High Commission for Refugees.
Respectfully dressed in a traditional salwar kameez, the brunette beauty visited some of the Afghan refugees who fled their country to escape the ravages of war. She also chatted with some of the many families now living at the Kacha Ghari Repatriation Centre outside Peshawar.
The 29-year-old also met up with Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz, whom she thanked for his efforts to help the beleaguered peoples who have sought shelter in his country. Literally millions of Afghans have been pouring into Pakistan since 1979 when the Soviet Union first invaded. With the country now under the control of coalition forces, some refugees have begun returning home, but there are still an estimated three million living in Pakistan.
Angelina's devotion to human rights issues is already well known. Since she first agreed to collaborate with the UNHCR in 2001 she has travelled to camps in Russia, Africa, Asia and the Middle East. And having already adopted her son Maddox in Cambodia, the actress - who channels millions of pounds of her own money into relief efforts - says she is planning to adopt another orphan before long. |
