During his years as frontman of the chart-topping band Boyzone, Ronan Keating was adored by millions of young pop fans all over the world. The Irish singer has now become a bona-fide hero, however, after saving the life of a woman who was choking.

The 28-year-old performer was eating at a restaurant in Northern Ireland when one of the other diners suddenly found herself unable to breath. "As I swallowed some bread I laughed at a joke," explained 38-year-old Sam Wright afterwards. "The next thing I knew I was gasping for air. I felt my lungs emptying. I stood up and tried to gasp for air but I couldn't - I was scared."

Ronan immediately sprang into action, performing the Heimlich manoeuvre to clear the woman's airway. "Everyone was watching me," said Sam. "Then Ronan jumped up, came behind me, put his thumbs under my ribs and pulled back. The bread popped out and I could breathe. Thank God Ronan was there."

The Westlife founder was in Northern Ireland as he continued his epic charity walk. Ronan and his entourage are aiming to trek the entire length of Ireland in order to raise money for cancer charities and thereby save more lives.
