In a startling move, the Prince of Wales has listed Camilla Parker Bowles' expenses among his own in his official accounts.
The records confirm that Charles is paying for some of his companion's costs, along with those of his sons Prince William and Prince Harry.
In a section dedicated to his personal expenses, it is revealed that the Prince pays for "some personal costs" of Camilla with income stemming from the Duchy of Cornwall, his private estate. It marks the first occasion that the heir to the throne has mentioned Camilla in an official document.
The number of personal staff in the Prince's household has been raised this year – from 17 to 28 – a change in part attributed to the inclusion of Mrs Parker Bowles' three staff. Camilla was given private offices at Clarence House, the Queen Mother's former home, when the Prince moved into the 19th-century building last year.
Charles' private secretary Sir Michael Peat played down the importance of Camilla's inclusion. However, the revelation has provoked comment among royal watchers.
"It's not hugely significant," said Sir Michael. "Obviously her staff have an office here to cope with work really that arises because of her connection with the Prince of Wales.
"We're trying to cover all angles and be as open and accountable as we can be."
