Prince Charles has been getting to know some of his subjects as he continues a three-day tour of Wales. The future king paid a visit to the appropriately named Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil on Tuesday, where he spent the afternoon chatting with patients and staff.

The 55-year-old had come along to inspect a £38-million extension that has recently been added on to the facility. But he got a pleasant surprise when he met Peter Lloyd, a patient at the hospital, whose father was steward to the Duke of Edinburgh. Charles also shared an animated conversation with Joan Tooth from Hyde, who is receiving treatment after suffering a stroke.

Earlier in the day the Prince saw some healing of a very different kind during a visit to Equine Shiatsu Treatments in Haverfordwest. The royal is an outspoken proponent of alternative therapies, but this was the first time he'd seen an animal receiving shiatsu massage.

"The Prince was very, very interested in the therapy method," revealed Allan Mogridge, who runs the centre. "It all stems from ancient Chinese and Japanese methods, going back thousands of years. The Prince was very interested."
