The Belgian royal family has led a day of spectacular celebrations to mark the 60th anniversary of their country's liberation from the Nazis. The festivities got underway on Tuesday night with a series of free concerts around the country, and continued right through the following day.

Prince Laurent donned a traditional Naval uniform for the occasion, while his wife Princess Claire made a bold style statement in a blue and white trouser suit. The memorable ensemble, the print on which drew comparisons with that of a willow-pattern plate, was complemented by a matching hat with orange trim and orange gloves.

King Albert and Queen Paola started the day by attending a service at Brussels' Sainte Gudule Cathedral while Crown Prince Philippe and Princess Mathilde were at Sainte Waudru Cathedral in Mons.

Throughout the day revellers gathered in the capital city's two main squares, Place Poelaert and Place Royale, for a party which lasted from 10am until midnight. And a commemorative parade swept past the royal palace in the afternoon, with representatives from all the allied nations.

For those with the stamina to keep going late into the evening, a fireworks display was staged at the Place des Palais just before midnight.
