Princess Mary, wife of Crown Prince Frederik of Denmark, has undergone a successful operation to remove a gallstone, the royal house has confirmed. The 32-year-old, who was accompanied by her husband, underwent the procedure on Sunday at local hospital, said a spokesperson.

"As a result of a gallstone attack, the crown princess underwent a scheduled operation at Gentofte County Hosptial," read a statement issued on Monday. The keyhole surgery went "smoothly", and the Australian-born princess is expected to spend one to two weeks recuperating.

The surprise announcement emerged as royal watchers from Denmark to Australia speculated that the crown prince and princess would soon have some baby news. Citing hospital sources, the weekly Se Og Hør reported that Mary had an ultrasound three weeks ago at a Copenhagen clinic.

Princess Mary, who was released a few hours after the operation, is understood to be recovering at Chancellery House, an extension of Fredensborg Castle, 20 miles north of Copenhagen.
