In a series of closely fought battles on the high seas, local favourite Princess Mary emerged victorious as she pipped her husband Prince Frederik to the post at a yachting extravaganza held in Sydney Harbour on Sunday.
Hundreds of eager onlookers watched as the 33-year-old princess dressed in black shorts, white windbreaker and sporting shades, helped crew a yacht helmed by Australian sailing ace Chris Meehan.
Even though Frederik had arrived in Sydney early last week to prepare for the event, the Australian boat squeaked out victories in the first and third races to take the regatta from the Danish yacht Nanoq skippered by the prince.
The return yachting showdown between the two Danish royals comes after their famous battle prior to their wedding last May when the prince was defeated by his bride-to-be at a similar regatta held in Copenhagen.
The Danish royals continue their first official visit to Australia with a lunch tomorrow with New South Wales premier Bob Carr.
