Just two weeks before they celebrate their first wedding anniversary, Spain's popular Crown Prince Felipe and Princess Letizia have announced they are expecting their first child.

The palace issued a brief statement on Sunday, confirming that the baby is due in November and including a message from King Juan Carlos and Queen Sofia expressing their "great happiness" at the prospect of what will be their seventh grandchild.

Under the current Spanish constitution, the child would have to be a boy to become second in line to the throne after his father. However, it is expected that the constitution will be changed in order for the crown prince's eldest child to become next in line, whatever its gender. This would mean that Felipe, who is younger than both his sisters, would be the last to accede to the throne under a male-dominated succession system.

The news comes two weeks after the Danish crown couple revealed they are expecting their first baby in late October. Crown Prince Frederik and Crown Princess Mary married on May 14 last year, with Felipe and Letizia following them up the aisle just eight days later. And with the pregnancy announcements just 13 days apart, it will be interesting to see how close the actual births are.

Spain's little prince or princess won't be the family's only new arrival of the year: Felipe's sister Cristina is expecting her fourth child in early summer.
