Princess Caroline's husband, Prince Ernst of Hanover, has made his first public appearance since an April health scare.

The 51-year-old royal was hospitalised in intensive care suffering from pancreatitis on April 5, just one day before the death of his father-in-law, Prince Rainier.

Having kept a low profile since his April 18 release, Prince Ernst reappeared at his wife's side on Sunday, attending the Monaco Gran Prix with the principality's new ruler, Prince Albert.

Within days of returning home after his hospital stay last month, Prince Ernst, a direct descendant of King George III, admitted he had a drinking problem and vowed to change his ways. "For 35 years, my lifestyle has been more than difficult," said the father-of-three. "But now things are going to be different. I must take it step by step."

On Sunday, the reformed prince and the Monegasque royals held a minute of silence in memory of the late Prince Rainier before the start of the Formula One race.
