Tragedy visited again, however, when sports-loving Stefano died in a speedboat accident in 1990. The blow of losing her husband and a desire to shield her children from the media prompted Caroline to leave Monaco for the secluded French town of Saint Remy de Provence.
There she raised her family in privacy and entered into a lengthy liaison with French actor Vincent Lindon. When she wed for the third time, however, it was to Prince Ernst-August of Hanover, a cousin of the Queen. The couple welcomed a daughter, Princess Alexandra of Hanover, not long after tying the knot in 1999. And, despite her husband's controversial and highly public outbursts, these days Rainier and Grace's elder daughter seems to have discovered a measure of the tranquillity which evaded her for so long.
