Over fifty years have passed since Sean Connery made his movie debut, but the veteran actor has lost none of his form. Indeed the Scottish performer, who once came third in the Mr Universe competition, proved he was still fighting fit when he struck a muscle-flexing pose on Saturday night.

The iconic performer, who turns 76 this week, was guest of honour at a glitzy bash to celebrate 60 years of the Edinburgh Film Festival. Oscar-winner Charlize Theron and Alien star Sigourney Weaver joined British favourites like Alan Rickman and Robbie Coltrane at the exclusive event.

And even though he was presented with a special Bafta award in recognition of his glittering career, Sir Sean insisted the festival itself should be the real star. "It's been going for 60 years and it's the one continuous festival that's recognised by people like John Houston and Steven Soderbergh," he said. "Anybody in the film world who knows anything about movies is a supporter because it has produced lots and lots of successes, and it will produce even more because we have a plan to develop it further."
