Meanwhile Ed Sheeran, whose second album X charted at number one in 12 countries around the world, has also been nominated to win Best Pop Vocal for the album.
Ed joined fellow nominee Pharrell Williams live on CBS This Morning as the first few nominations were announced on Friday morning.
Pharrell, who is nominated for Best Urban Contemporary album, tried to keep his cool as the shortlist was announced.
“We don’t want to like, geek out in front of everybody. This is national TV," he said.

Charli XCX, who hails from Cambridge, has also made her Grammys debut with a nomination for Record of The Year for her collaboration on single Fancy with Iggy Azalea. Meanwhile Coldplay could win their eighth Grammy Award if they win the Best Pop Vocal award for their album Ghost Stories.
The nominations cap off the end of an incredible year for Sam Smith, who has had a stratospheric rise to fame following the release of his debut album in May. The singer counts Taylor Swift, Selena Gomez and Kim Kardashian among his celebrity fans, so will no doubt be a strong contender for the awards in February.
The Brits are in good company as they are up against the likes of Taylor Swift, Beyoncé and Pharrell Williams for the prestigious awards, which will be announced on 8 February.
