At the weekend Hubertus Michael, Hereditary Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha, wed his American love Kelly Rondestvedt in gothic Morizkirche church in the Bavarian town of Coburg.

Investment banker Kelly, 34, was radiant on her big day in a classic floor-length gown with lace sleeves. She carried a bunch of white roses interspersed with pale lilac hydrangea florets, and was accompanied by bridesmaids dressed in cornflower blue.

Hubertus, who's the great-great-great-grandson of Queen Victoria, is heir to the head of the family which, until 1918, ruled the Duchy of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha – the present day states of Bavaria and Thuringa.

The 33-year-old lawyer currently lives and works in the financial sector in New York, the city where he and Kelly met in 2007.

Among the 400 guests at the nuptials were King Carl Gustaf and Queen Silvia of Sweden, who was born in Germany. The royal couple were greeted with applause by about 3,000 wellwishers who had turned out to witness the bride and groom's progress.

After the religious ceremony the bridal party moved to 12th-century Callenburg Castle, just outside of Coburg. The venue has special significance for the couple as it's where Hubertus popped the question.

He went down on one knee in the grounds – which his father, Andreas, Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha had decorated in readiness with bouquets of roses.
