Mystery surrounds Vladimir Putin's black eye

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has kept his countrymen guessing after he arrived for talks with Ukrainian leaders sporting what appeared to be a black eye covered up with heavy make up.

Being a black-belt in judo, some reports say it may have been due to the hazards of the combative sport.

Others, however, suggested the 58-year-old politician could have undergone some type of surgery.

Ukrainian television also reported that he had noticeable swelling to the eye and he appeared to be in a “bad mood” at the meeting.

Quick to deny the rumours, the prime minister’s office said the apparent black eye was simply due to bad lighting and a very busy schedule.
