Queen presents new colours recognising service in Iraq

Thursday May 7, 2009

Accompanied by her husband, Prince Philip, the Queen presented new colours to the 1st battalion of the Irish Guards on Wednesday. During the ceremony she praised the bravery of those serving in the regiment.
Spring-like in a powder blue top coat and matching hat decorated with a pink flower, the monarch inspected the troops on the quadrangle at Windsor Castle – where she is still based following her relocaction before Easter – before handing over the new ceremonial flag to two young officers.
"You have the greatest cause to be proud of your achievements," the 83-year-old royal told the gathered guardsmen as she made the presentation of the new colours, which display for the first time the battle honours recognising the battalion's service in Iraq.
