Comedian and actor Eddie Murphy has been announced as the host of next year's Oscars.
The Beverly Hills Cop star will lead the 84th annual Academy Awards ceremony in February 2012.
Oscar producer Brett Ratner hailed him as "a comedic genius, and one of the greatest and most influential live performers ever".
He mentioned Eddie’s passion for movies and natural charisma as reasons why he is the perfect candidate to host the event.
Famed for his quick wit and energetic onstage presence, the Nutty Presenter will join a list of fellow comedic giants to have hosted the prestigious Hollywood extravaganza.
Previous comperes include Whoopi Goldberg, Ellen, Steve Martin, Billy Crystal and Chris Rock.
Following criticism of James Franco and Anne Hathaway's performance at the 2011 ceremony, producers are hoping that Eddie will be as much of a hit as he was when talking to animals.
