David Cameron rushes to France after father falls ill

Wednesday September 8, 2010

As a father to a new-born baby, David Cameron will be loath to leave his little girl's side even for a moment.

But a family emergency has meant that the Prime Minister has had to leave his wife and children behind and cancel all political engagements.

The Conservative leader's father has been taken seriously ill while on holiday in France.

And, after speaking with doctors where his dad is being treated, Mr Cameron made the decision to fly to be with him and his mother Mary.

Downing Street has confirmed that 77-year-old Ian suffered a stroke and heart complications while on holiday.

It is thought that the politician's brother and sister are also making their way to France.

Mr Cameron will miss the first Prime Minister's Question Time session following the summer break on Wednesday.

Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg will fill in instead.
