Prince Philip continues agenda after hand surgery

Wednesday June 9, 2010

The Duke of Edinburgh continued with his official engagements on Tuesday, despite undergoing an operation on his hand the day before.

The Queen's 88-year-old husband underwent day surgery on his left hand on Monday to treat carpal tunnel syndrome, a common condition that causes pain, numbness and a burning sensation in the hand and fingers.

But with his left hand bandaged he was back the following day, meeting guests at a reception at the Canadian High Commissioner's residence in central London.

Although the Duke – who turns 89 on Thursday – is trying to fulfil all his London engagements, the procedure has caused him to cancel a birthday trip to Crewe alongside the Queen.

The journey would have required him to stay overnight on the royal train and spend a long day on his feet.
