English roots of Valleys hero Tom Jones revealed

He's one of Wales' national treasures, but Tom Jones is actually three-quarters English. The Sex Bomb singer's surprising ancestry was revealed this week by census records dating back to 1911.

The official documents, made public for the first time this week, show his paternal grandparents were James Woodward, an ironmonger's haulier born in Gloucestershire, and Anne Woodward, from Wiltshire.

His grandmother on his mother's side was Ada Jones, who hails from Pontypridd - although her parents came from Somerset and Wiltshire. His only all-Welsh ancestor was his great-grandfather Albert Jones, a miner born in Cardiff.

Sir Tom, dubbed "the voice of the Valleys" was born and raised in Pontypridd. He now lives in LA, but is fiercely proud of his nationality and frequently makes trips home to Wales to visit family and friends.
