Ellen to represent 'the people's point of view' on American Idol

Chat show host Ellen DeGeneres is stepping into the shoes of former judge Paula Abdul on US talent show American Idol.

The 51-year-old will join Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson and Kara DioGuardi next year for the show's ninth season.

The vivacious blonde, who confirms she will still continue her daily chat show, hopes to become "the people's point of view", on the programme.

"I'm looking at it as a person who is going to buy the music and is going to relate to that person," she says. "I'm just like you."

As she gets ready for her new role, a number of celebrity stars including Victoria Beckham and Shania Twain are due to make one-off guest appearances in place of Paula.
