Weakened Mia Farrow ends Darfur hunger strike after 12 days

Monday May 11, 2009

Actress Mia Farrow has ended the hunger strike she undertook to show solidarity with the people of Darfur. The slight star had modified her original goal of 21 days to 16, but on Friday – at the 12-day mark - she was instructed by her doctor to stop immediately after her blood sugar dropped dangerously low.

Mia says she lost 13lbs and became so weak she couldn't stand during the fast, which she embarked upon in protest against the Sudanese government's decision to expel foreign aid agencies from the Darfur region in Sudan.

During the 12 days without food Mia stayed close to her bed and listened to classical music and read books. "I watched Schindler's List all the way through. Then I cried and cried," she tells US publication People. "I got very emotional at the drop of a hat. I would perk up when my granddaughter came over. I'd play with her a little and that was great."

She has asked Virgin boss Richard Branson to take over where she left off. The business mogul has apparently agreed to begin a three-day fast on Friday
