Ian McKellen has revealed that he has been suffering with prostrate cancer "for six or seven years."
The actor, famed for his recent role as Gandalf the wizard in The Hobbit, said that he isn't seeking any treatment as the area is "contained".
"You do gulp when you hear the news. It's like when you go for an HIV test, you go 'Arghhh, is this the end of the road'?" said the 73-year-old.
"They say you have cancer of the prostate and then that you can have it zapped.
"You can have it snipped but you are not a candidate for that. You are watchful, waiting."
The actor first discovered he had the disease when he had frequent urges to go the toilet during the night. Ian insists that he is receiving the best medical care to contain it.
"When you have got it you monitor it and you have to be careful it doesn't spread. But if it is contained in the prostrate it's no big deal."
